The host of the JohnGrenham.com web repository and the Irish Roots blog returns for an annual update. John's team has made major upgrades to the mapping features on his site over the past year, and we look forward to learning of leveraging his tools in tandem with the newly released 1926 Census of Ireland.

Teasers include:

  • Complete redesign of the surname information dashboard.
  • Updated surname mapping.
  • New zoomable maps of Griffith's householders and listings of all surname variants.
  • A collaboration with FindMyPast.ie results in Griffith's entries, now mapped down to townland level, with a much more fine-grained overview of exactly where families were in a county and parish.
  • With FMP data  over 8,000 new surnames: unique spellings, mis-transcriptions, & actual new variants of exisitng surnames. All are integrated with the existing surnames and variants tables.
In 2005 John was the first Genealogist-in-Residence at Dublin City Library. He completed fellowships with The Irish Genealogical Research Society and with the Genealogical Society of Ireland. He is the author of Tracing your Irish Ancestors (5th ed. Dublin, Baltimore, 2019), the standard reference guide for Irish genealogy and the basis for the Irish Ancestors website. Other books include The Little Book of Irish Clans (2015), The Atlantic Coast of Ireland (2014), Clans and Families of Ireland (1995), and An Illustrated History of Ireland (1997). He wrote the "Irish Roots" column in The Irish Times from 2009-16 and started the Irish Ancestors website in conjunction with The Irish Times. Since 2016 he manages the successor website at www.johngrenham.com and continues the blog there.
